OK, I didn’t really buy the company, but I ended up working for the company. Above you see the actual letter I wrote as a General Sales Manager in June of 2002 after I attended the Sales Management Symposium. This one program changed my life … literally!!!

I know that’s a strong statement, but let me back it up. I was never a strong sales person or manager (although I thought I was at the time.) After attending the Sales Management Symposium I would run into Bill Brooks at social events our wives dragged us to in the art community. Bill and I would get a glass of wine and sneak away to talk about sales. I would share with him my progress in using his principles and material while he would give me his advice.

This continued over a period of 2 years and I shared with Bill the challenges I was having as well as the strides I made implementing what I had learned. At one function I was telling Bill about a particular frustration and I recall Bill asking me to be a part of his company. I must admit Bill’s version differs from mine because he recall’s me “begging” him to join his company. Somewhere in the middle is the truth. The point is, since joining Bill’s company and utilizing the principles of what he teaches, I have become one of the top performers in his company. I didn’t “buy” his company, but I feel like I have ownership of the company. I think that attitude is the basis for success in any career you choose.

Do you wake up on Monday looking forward to going to work? If not, then find a company you would like to “buy”.
