Growing up in Upstate NY (Syracuse), some of my fondest memories involved being active in youth sports. Whether it was baseball, football or basketball (I wasn’t very good), I was fortunate to have great youth coaches. Next to my parents, these dedicated adults had a profound influence on my life in a very positive way. Even today, I think about lessons learned: Teamwork, Dedication, Positive Encouragement, Perseverance; Setting Goals…

This impact led me to a 20-year career as a college football coach. The coaches I worked with continue to influence my life. (I currently work for my college football coach, Bill Brooks).

Who do we go to now when we have questions about business decisions, career guidance, personal matters, etc.?

The role of a coach – some people may refer to as a mentor – is as valuable and important now as it was as a youth learning to play sports. I strongly recommend finding people who you trust and respect and developing that “special relationship” with them. Someone who always has the best interest of you and your family at heart and that you can always count on for objective advice and guidance is really important.

Just as we all need to be coached throughout our lives, look for opportunities to be that special person for others, because everyone needs a coach.
